about

The traditional Māori musical instruments, taonga pūoro, have been subject to a revival over the past few decades. On these duo improvisations, Jake Kīanō Skinner utilises various flutes and pecussion instruments fashioned from bone, shells, wood and stone. He is joined by Noel Meek on no-input mixing board.

The title Whakaaro, which suggests "thinking" and "encountering" in Te Reo Māori, is appropriate, as the duo carve out a quiet, intimate and meditative aural space. Meek's piercing drones initially seem to act as a counterpoint to the tactile feel of the taonga pūoro, but the distinction becomes blurred, with the electronics developing in texture and Skinner testing the extremes of his instruments.
