The third release by Dublin's Collision Objects, ‘Sense Routines’ is an experiment in generative music programming inspired by Henri Lefebvre's theory of rhythmanalysis and the practice of self-tracking via wearable technology.

Lefebvre posited rhythmanalysis as an embodied approach to understanding the biological and structural rhythms of the everyday. The human body, he suggested, contained several rhythms, both simple repetitions and alternating repetitions. The task of the rhythmanalyst was to listen for and to identify rhythms and arrhythmias in the body and consider how they might relate to the temporal and spatial environment.

Recorded in early 2019 during an extended period of recuperation from illness, ‘Sense Routines’ explores the relationship between rhythmanalysis and the routine metrics recorded by wearable fitness trackers: the number of steps walked, heart rate, calories consumed, sleep quality etc. The album consists of two extended repetitions or variations on a routine. Each comprises a short cycle of randomly generated notes that alternately drift in and out of synchronicity. The repetitions progress from a state of sleep, through a period of prolonged activity, before shifting gradually back to repose.

As a generative work, the repetitions recorded here are simply two possible variations: the sounds can be recombined and reconfigured in any number of ways. The constituent stems are available here should any listener wish to restructure or remix the piece.
