Fergus Kelly is a Dublin based visual artist, composer and improvisor. His musical work incorporates field recordings, invented instruments, and electronics. Solo work and collaborations with the likes of Max Eastley, Mark Wastell and Bruno Duplant have appeared on labels such as Confront, Stolen Mirror, and Farpoint, as well as his own Room Temperature imprint.
Kelly has a long-running association with improvisor / percussionist David Lacey, whose recent releases have included FEF-released collaborations with Susan Geaney and David Donohoe, and a solo cassette on Falt.
Magnetic North is a single 41-minute piece propelled by a continuous snare roll accompanied variously by droning swells of bowed cymbal, springs and bass, electronics, and percussion. The piece blurs the lines between improvisation and electroacoustic composition, shifting with subtle dynamics through a variety of textures, the mood by turns meditative and ominous.
"The recording quality, the engineering, magnificent, do not spoil the picture. The performers use a wide variety of percussion instruments and objects, bowed most of the time. It results in resonant and evolving textures, and it seemed to me that the construction, in its progression, is more and more ritualistic, and lets the instrumentation evolve towards an emphasis on gongs. Almost prickly at the end (it highlights the variety of techniques used to widen the sonic field) it offers a stellar and fine-tuned combination of silence and sound . In all their contrast, they make the piece powerful without even exceeding a threshold of volume which one could believe necessary to feel fully invaded by the music" - Bastien, angiohm.com
